How to Setup your Tax Rate on eBay | eBay Sales Tax

If you are a seller of eBay, you need to know that eBay sellers are responsible for complying with all the applicable tax laws. eBay, the e-commerce giant, charges sales tax in order to comply with marketplace facilitator laws. This article is going to guide you regarding all the facets of eBay sales tax and how to set up the rate of the tax.

eBay collects sales tax in accordance with applicable state law. For the buyers in the state with a marketplace facilitator law, eBay will add sales tax for the purchase. You can use the sales tax table to enter the tax rate where you may have the obligation to collect tax from the buyer. It will let your buyers know how much tax they are paying.

If you have not yet set up the tax table eBay is still charging sales tax on behalf of you. The buyers can see the charge during the checkout process.

If your buyer is outside the US, they need to pay the import charges.

To enable the tax table go to My eBay, click on Account.

Click on “Selling preferences”.

Click on the edit button of the Sales tax table.

Add your tax to the table and save. If you also need to tax shipping and handling in that state, turn on the Apply sales tax on shipping and handling.

You can check how much taxes you are collecting. Go to the Seller hub click on the “Order” tab. Select “Paid and shipped”.

Click on Download report.

A report will be downloaded and you will have the collected tax information.

When you are charging the sales tax, your customers may ask you about that. Tell them that eBay is collecting the tax. If they want to learn more they can contact eBay customer support.
